God is Creative

One thing that pretty much all Christians agree on is that God is the creator of the world. We may disagree on just exactly how God did that or when God did it or how much time it took, but nearly every Christian would agree that, however it happened, God did create the world.
The reason I bring that up is that if God is the creator, that means God is creative.  Maybe that seems redundant to you, but it brings up an aspect of God that we don’t always think about. When we’re asked to describe God, we tend to say things like God is love or God is almighty or God is all-powerful.  Sometimes, we mention other things, such as God is merciful or God is righteous.  We don’t very often say that God is creative.
That’s too bad, because it seems to me that this is a pretty remarkable aspect of God.  You have to admit that God is pretty good at it.  Just walk outside sometime.  Look at the trees, and the grass, and the flowers.  Look at the birds and the animals.  Look up at the sky, at the clouds and the sun (well, don’t look right at the sun).  Go out at night and look at the moon and the stars.  God is incredibly creative.
Creativity is one of the aspects of humans that’s a gift from God.  In fact, it’s one of the ways in which we’re created in God’s image.  Just as God is creative, most of us are creative, too, in one form or another.
Have you ever known a really creative person?  If you have, you’ve probably noticed something about them.  A really creative person cannot help but create.  There’s something inside of them that drives them to do it.  They may enjoy it—in fact, they probably enjoy it—but they don’t create just for enjoyment.  They create because they feel compelled to do so.  They may not even be able to explain why they create; they create because creating is what they do. They create because creating is who they are.
I think that applies to God, too.  If we concede that God is, in fact, creative, then it seems to me that there is something about who God is that drives God to create.  God creates because creating is what God does.  God creates because creating is who God is.
If creating is who God is, then it seems to me that God must still be creating now.  We think of the first couple of chapters of Genesis as “The Creation Story”, but in fact the creation story continues to this day.  It’s going on all around us.  Every day, every hour, God continues to create.
That seems like a pretty awesome thought.  If God is still creating, think of the possibilities that exist for this world.  Think of the possibilities that exist for the universe.  Think of all the incredible, unimaginable things that could happen if God is still creating.
Then, think of the possibilities that exist for your life or for my life.  Even if things are not going so well right now, even if things seem pretty hopeless, they’re not.  God is still creating.  That means that there’s always the potential for new possibilities and for new chances. Our futures could go in all kinds of directions, because there’s no limit to what God can do.
No matter what your situation, look at it with a new perspective and with new hope. God is still creating, and God can do anything.
